Frequently Asked Questions

Students must be 14 years and 8 months old by the first day of class to be qualified to attend.

Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction and 4 hours of observation time.

$25 Fee and the following:

– A Certificate of Completion from Segment I class
– An original Birth Certificate
– A Social Security card or other legal proof of SS number
– Photo Identity (i.e. from school…)
– Michigan residency (Parent driver license/address)
– Parent/guardian signature required on the application
– Pass a basic vision screening at the Secretary of State.

Teens issued a Level 1 license may only drive with a licensed parent/guardian or designated licensed adult age 21 or older.

Segment 2 consists of 6 hours of classroom instruction with a Certified Michigan Driver Education Instructor.

The student must possess a valid level one learner’s license for a minimum of 3 months and have completed at least 30 hours of on the road driving with a parent/guardian.  At least 2 of the 30 hours must be night time driving.

A minimum of 6 months (180 days) of driving and 50 logged hours (10 of which are night time), along with taking the Segment 2 class are required,  before a final road skills test can be scheduled.
