How The Licensing Process Works In The State Of Michigan

Step 1: Segment 1 Class
Classroom & Driving Instruction

Consists of:

  • 24 hours of classroom instruction
  • 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction
  • 4 hours of observation time

After successfully completing this portion, a Segment 1 drivers permit will be issued for future driving practice with a qualified licensed adult supervising.

Step 2: Obtain Level 1 License
Secretary of State

Teens issued a Level 1 license may only drive with a licensed parent/guardian or designated licensed adult age 21 or older.

Step 3: Segment 2 Class
Classroom Instruction

Consists of:

  • 6 hours of classroom instruction with a Certified Michigan Driver Education Instructor.

 

Eligibility?

The student must possess a valid level one learner’s license for a minimum of 3 months and have completed at least 30 hours of on the road driving with a parent/guardian.  At least 2 of the 30 hours must be night time driving.

Step 4: Road Test

Road Test Requirements:

  • A minimum of 6 months (180 days) of driving and 50 logged hours (10 of which are night time)
  • Segment 2 class is required,  before a final road skills test can be scheduled.
